Horse enthusiasts sometimes have peculiar descriptions for their horses' movements and behavior. There are many expressions for a horse that shows restricted movement or even slight lameness. In fact, a lot of movement problems can be divided into different categories. At first glance, a delayed or limping hindquarters can cause the horse's gait to appear stiff. The hind legs somehow do not swing forward properly.

The most important thing is to get a really good diagnosis to figure out where this kind of restricted movement is coming from. Watch your horse closely and definitely check with a vet. Don't just look at problems with the legs or back. Think further: Could your horse be a mare that's having issues with her heat? Could it be that your horse needs to urinate more often than usual? Has your stallion recently been gelded? A stiff gait can also indicate an organ problem, such as kidney disease. Together with your veterinarian, you will be able to identify the cause.
