Why achieve your dream weight?

A large number of dogs are now overweight. However, maintaining the ideal weight is not purely a cosmetic issue. Overweight dogs live shorter lives than dogs of normal weight. A variety of diseases can result from being overweight, such as:

  • Osteoarthritis (= joint wear, see articles on elbow joint dysplasia and hip joint dysplasia)
  • High blood pressure
  • Diabetes mellitus (=diabetes, see corresponding article)
  • Cardiovascular diseases such as arteriosclerosis (=hardening of the arteries)
  • Cruciate ligament rupture (see corresponding article)
  • Tumors such as mammary tumors (see corresponding article)
  • Tracheal collapse (see corresponding article)
  • Skin problems
  • Tendency to inflammation such as pancreatitis or bronchitis (see corresponding articles)
  • Fat metabolism disorders such as fatty liver

Neutered dogs are more prone to obesity. It is particularly important to keep an eye on their weight.

On to your dream weight

Whether young or old, it's never too late to achieve your dream weight. Your veterinary practice can help you on your way: At your first appointment, you will receive information about your dog's ideal weight. Your dog will then be assessed from the side and from above to determine its Body Condition Score (BCS). Your dog's ideal weight will also be determined. Based on this, a ration calculation will be made with feeding recommendations that you should follow.

After that, your dog's weight will be checked every 4 weeks at a weigh-in appointment at your veterinary practice.

Maintain your dream weight

Even if your dog has already reached its ideal weight, it should be maintained. Your vet can also help you with this by calculating the maintenance ration for your dog. You should then take your dog for a weigh-in every six months.
