Why achieve your dream weight?

A large number of cats are now overweight. However, maintaining the ideal weight is not purely a cosmetic issue. Overweight cats live shorter lives than cats of normal weight. A variety of diseases can result from being overweight, such as:

  • Arthritis (= joint wear)
  • High blood pressure (see corresponding article)
  • Diabetes mellitus (=diabetes, see corresponding article)
  • Cardiovascular diseases such as arteriosclerosis (hardening of the arteries)
  • FLUTD (feline lower urinary tract disease, see corresponding article)
  • Skin problems
  • Tendency to inflammation
  • Fat metabolism disorders such as fatty liver

Neutered cats, especially male cats, are more prone to obesity. It is particularly important to keep an eye on their weight.

On to your dream weight

Whether young or old, it's never too late to achieve your dream weight. Your veterinary practice can help you on your way: At your first appointment, you will receive information about your cat's ideal weight. Your cat will then be assessed from the side and from above to determine its Body Condition Score (BCS). Your cat's ideal weight will also be determined. Based on this, a ration calculation will be made with feeding recommendations that you should follow.

After that, your cat's weight will be checked every 4 weeks at a weigh-in appointment at your veterinary practice.

Maintain your dream weight

Even if your cat has already reached its ideal weight, it should be maintained. Your vet can also help you with this by calculating the maintenance ration for your cat. You should then take your cat for a weigh-in every six months.
